Hello Updaters!! News will be coming out all day in *** Current News *** and *** Chat Comments *** is full of good stuff. Thanks – BGG
I can almost guarantee a Conference Call later this evening – we’ll advertise the numbers and I do have a “bomb shell”!!
*** Flashback ***
UPDATE: I won’t be doing a “flashback” today. My main comment is it appears as though Maliki intends to take this fight all the way to the Parliament. I didn’t doubt it to start with. There are some very interesting twists in the news – check it out.
There appears to have been an assasination attempt (or plot, or self-serving PR) on Maliki. There are reports of coming arrests.
Also – it appears as though Talibani is meeting with a lot of the players right now. It has the feel of “consensus building” to me.
Poppy made an interesting comment to me yesterday – he said “Talibani and Maliki were in that meeting – I’ll bet Maliki was asking for more time (easy to believe), Talibani said – No Way and Maliki started in with the ‘disband the Parliament’ routine”. Made a lot of sense to me.

Finally!! They are getting it through their heads this has to happen if they would like to survive on the landscape of Iraqi politics. I have said this for a while now – if Maliki gets ousted, the SLC and Dawa parties are dead for 20 years (if not forever).
Legal Committee: Maliki’s call on the freezing of the Constitution a serious and strange
A member of the Committee Azad Abu Bakr’s (Citizen): »that the constitution a social contract voted by the people, how can it Ndjemdh». I put the whole article up – but mainly it’s legal experts saying this is a “strange and bizarre” proclamation. They go back and forth in the article but can make no case for Maliki’s request – other than a desperate dictator “in the making” who has run out of options.
Kurdish lawmaker confirms that the confidence of the Maliki government is out of the question
A member of the Kurdistan Alliance, Mehdi Rose that “if the blocks did not reach political solutions and understandings of the outstanding problems through dialogue and discussion will resort to the withdrawal of confidence.”
He said Mahdi told all of Iraq [where] that “the issue of withdrawal of confidence from Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ordered out of the question and is unlikely in the case did not reach meetings and ongoing discussions to resolve the current crisis.
I like this kid!! He’s Kurdish MP and he’s saying – either Maliki gets this done or any thought of Maliki staying is out of the question!! Yeah!!
Five leaders meeting in Erbil hold a second meeting after the deadline of 15 days
Announced the decision of the parliament, on Saturday, for the five leaders among them the cleric Moqtada al-Sadr will go to Arbil to hold a second meeting them, explaining that this comes after the end of the fifteen-day deadline they gave to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
The MP said the coalition in Iraq Mohammed Khalidi that the deadline will end on the seventeenth of this month.
The leaders of the five who were the President of the Kurdistan region Masoud Barzani and President Jalal Talabani and the leader of Sadr Muqtada al-Sadr and the leader of the coalition in Iraq, Iyad Allawi, in addition to House Speaker Osama Najafi had held a meeting in Arbil two weeks ago, and agreed during the meeting a statement to resolve the political crisis involves giving notice to the owners not to exceed fifteen days for the implementation of the Erbil or withdraw confidence from the parliament.
With all the “consesus building”, meetings and erratic behavior by Maliki – I just don’t see him surviving another “Erbil Summit”. I suspect they have to do what is required to save the country and it’s getting to that place now.
State law: litigants have become wary of early elections for fear of al-Maliki win
Sumerian News / Baghdad
Said a coalition of state law, the Sabbath, that the opponents of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki have become wary of the idea of early elections for fear of beating them, in what was considered that there is no need for this option, and that recourse to it is when you close all the doors.
A member of the Coalition on the Keywords in an interview for “Alsumaria News”, “democracy with its own rules, the most important people’s exercise his right to vote,” adding that “the opponents of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s afraid of the idea of re-election, and will work to put obstacles in front of this idea, fearing win and the cluster that belongs to the elections, if held. ”
The cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, seen in (10 May 2012), the dissolution of parliament and early elections to resolve the political crisis, “evil” and a chance for the survival of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s ruling, asserting that it is in itself a kind of “dictatorship”.
Of course the SLC would say this!! They are wanting to goat the other parties into allowing early elections – as a delay mechanism. They know there is no way Maliki wins a popular vote or a “coalition building exercise again – just firing PR shots is all. Plus Sadr calls it “evil” – Nuff said!!
Maliki’s coalition is preparing for local elections to include the forces and political figures
Held a State of Law coalition led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki contacts and meetings with political figures and forces to persuade it to join the coalition, in preparation to run for the upcoming local elections.
The MP for the “state law” Khalid Asadi move to different forces to form a broad coalition: “We will announce the accession of the State law formally in the coming days”, revealing dialogues with some of the parties to urge them to join the law of the state, “we raised the principle of openness to all the components and the political forces in order to achieve alignments and alliances beyond national nationalism and sectarianism. ”
They are basically saying they are preparing for the local elections and “romancing” some attractive candidates – I say, you know when Maliki is getting ready for early elections because all the “impartial” election officials are getting rounded up and throw in jail. Maliki says – “There – now we’re ready”!!
MP claims life was threatened by political parties
BAGHDAD, May 12 (AKnews) – A former MP in the Iraqi Council of Representatives has claimed that certain parties are trying to influence the judiciary and others are trying to threaten his personal life. Mishan al-Jabbouri, who is expected to attend the Central Criminal Court on May 13, made the allegations about unnamed parties today. Jabbouri…
This isn’t a huge headline – but there is always the big story everyone hears about and the one really going on behind the scenes. This guys is a fairly big guy on the Iraqi political scene. If he really is getting threats…there is a “consensus play” going on in the background.
Here are some Headline Comments for today -
Talabani mulls political process problems with Saleh al-Mutlaq
What’s interesting about this headline is Talibani and Maliki’s mortal enemy are meeting. I wonder if Talibani isn’t trying to woo Al-Mutlag back to the table?? Or just getting him on board for what’s next – or both.
Talabani, Khuza’I discuss latest Iraqi developments
Also another important meeting – much like I pointed out about Maliki’s fever pitched media blitz, this appears to be a “whirlwind” of meetings Talibani is going though.
Joint action needed to overcome political crisis – Maliki, Talabani
This is the meeting Poppy was talking about earlier – I liked his take.
Talabani meets with Hakeem, Abdul Mehdi catches up with them
Talibani meeting with two more “swing votes” in the National Alliance. Very interesting…
Barazani discusses the political developments with a delegation representing Iraqiya slate
This is a fast developing alliance that the Central Government will have trouble with in the long run. The Kurds and Sadr should have never backed Maliki to start with but – Oh well, looks like they get a chance to make it right.
Al-Essawi met with Barzani…(in Erbil)
Also an interesting meeting here – Al-Essawi is a guy Maliki has “spared no grief” – they are not buddies (to say the least) and he’s up in Erbil today as well. Hmmmm….
*** Rumor Comments ***
Here are some comments I got in an e-mail – excellent debunking…
Q: Can you ask XYZ Trader what his opinion is on the $42 rate that we have heard? I know he can’t give rates and dates, but I would like to hear his thoughts on if Iraq would be able to sustain such an astonishing rate. I have never thought it would come out more than a dollar, and I know he cannot imply a rate even if he knew, but maybe he can say if this is ridiculous and put an end to this issue.
[XYZ Trader] Individuals throwing around rates are doing just that. They are basing these ideas on speculation. Only the Iraqi parliament and the CBI know that information. Please do not believe these so called gurus that have never traded currencies. They are just trying to get traffic on to their site.
Now – my only disagreement with this comment is – this trader needs to be much more careful about certain comments. It shows either a clear ignorance of, or disregard for certain currency trading regulations. Inferring that Parliament has any control over this also shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation. The CBI is autonomous. That means they don’t answer to the Parliament – Dr Shabibi has made it known he intends to include them, but that is as much for courtesy and propriety’s sake as much as anything.
Q: There is a rumor that you have paid some of these guru’s on the forums to pump dinar sales, was wondering what your position is on that?
There is plenty of evidence - this is a common practice. Sales alone is not the killer though - it’s reserves (the old rules). Sales = currency. No problem. You can always use currency. Reserves were the big pumping problem.
Q: Hi [XYZ Trader], I’m not asking for a rate or date but in your opinion, is the RV inevitable for the IQD? Like others, I have heard that some banks have started a rumor that the RV of the IQD is a scam. Your opinion please.
[XYZ Trader] What the banks or anyone else is referring to are the blatant lies that bloggers put on the web making speculative statements about the currency. They are sending people on an emotional roller coaster . People are walking into banks and making outlandish statements based on these rumors. The banks are telling people the information is a scam. Purchasing a currency of a country is not a scam. these gurus have not been right once in the last 8 years i don’t know why even people believe them
Folks – I have personally seen what is being referred to as the “back screens” – it’s a joke. Over blown imbelishment. It’s a list of buy/sell numbers – that is all. Nothing “insider” about it at all.
Further – the longer I go in this thing, the more convinced I am that we have some of the most well placed contacts there are. I have a close personal friend (and it’s not who you think) who was instrumental in starting nearly every currency dealer you now know. His comment on the above….”No Comment”. Which is the right comment.
If you find a crazy rumor or have a question about something you’ve heard – bring it to one of the Mods over at www.dinarupdates.com and we’ll use it here. Thanks!!
