Reverse Bucket List: Look Back Before Looking Forward
 By Nora Dunn

Everybody has a bucket list — a random list of things we'd like to do, be, or have before we “kick the bucket.” Some people make do with rough mental compilations, while others prefer their bucket lists typed, formatted, and prominently displayed.

But what of the bucket list? Where is the context? How satisfied will we feel about our lives today if we're constantly studying a list of things we haven't done? Where do we even begin with a list like this, instigated no less by a big clock in the sky counting us down towards an unknown “bucket date?”
...

I get panicky just thinking about it.

Although a bucket list can be motivational, I believe that in and of itself it can be more crippling than empowering. In order for a bucket list to reach its true potential, I think we should first start with a Reverse Bucket List.

What's a Reverse Bucket List?

In order to gauge where we're going, it's always good to know where we've come from. Creating a context of our journey thus far is imperative to understanding why we want the things we want, and ultimately, how to get them.

A Reverse Bucket List is a list of things that we think are “bucket list worthy,” but that we've already done. It's a creative way of reflecting on your life thus far and taking note of the some of the experiences that really sang to you.

Not only is it fun, but you might be surprised by what you've already done in your life. (Conversely, you may realize you need to get out of the house more.)

Either way, it's all good.

Reverse Bucket List Exercise

You may want to structure the exercise of making your Reverse Bucket List using the method for devising 100 ways to change your life.

By doing it as a fast-paced brainstorming exercise, you may be surprised at what makes its way on to your Reverse Bucket List. There are no right or wrong answers — only your own answers. It's your life, and your reverse bucket list; write down as many things as you can, without worrying about what you're actually writing. We'll get to that later.

Here are a few general ideas to get your reflective juices flowing:

    Achievements or awards you've received

    Fears you've conquered

    Careers you've had

Friends you've made and people you've met

    Places you've traveled to

Anything that's worthy of a story you tell other people

    Goals and milestones you reached

Childhood dreams (no matter how silly in retrospect) you achieved

Bizarre or fun things that have happened to you or that you've done

What to Do With Your List

This isn't a pesky to-do list or a vision board that requires prominent display as a reminder of what you need to do or where you're going.

Instead, it's more in the act of constructing and initially reviewing your Reverse Bucket List that you will see the benefits.

Once you've finished writing out your Reverse Bucket List, read through it. What do you think? Do you notice any themes? Are there any gaps? How does reading this list make you feel?

Regardless of whether you feel there's too little or too much on your Reverse Bucket List, you might discover some of the things on it are surprising, even illuminating. And they might lead you to your next step.

The Next Step

Using the observations you made above, now is a great time to project your Reverse Bucket List forward. To reverse the Reverse Bucket List, as it were.

Was a nurse for 38 yrs. Got to work in OB and Surg. Loved both. Took care of a tiny baby one time, she was fighting to live. A team worked over her, later her mom brought her in for a hearing test, but she was about four months old and so alert and such a fun baby. Her mom said that I was the nurse that her husband pointed out as saving their baby's life. It made me cry though I realized that it took the team.
i've lived in CA, AZ, OR, ID, TN GA, MI. So got to travel back and forth across America. I love this land. I want to go to the New England states in the fall (haven't seen those yet. There is no bad places, just different.
I've been in Canada, Mexico, Palau, Yap, Guam, and Japan, and recently Cuba. Got to go as anevangelist, first time in my life.
I've grown a big garden. Made quilts. Sewn dresses and clothes for my boys. Yes, I'm a mother of two hansome sons, and now a great daughter-in-law.
I married a sweetheart, and we had almost 37 yrs together.
I've had the priveledge of playing the piano and the organ.
got to fly in a small plane with my dad as pilot. Then later we flew together in a helicopter.
I've waded in the Atlantic and Pacific. Snorkeled in Palau, Yap and Guam.
Well my get up and go has got up and went, but OH, where my get up has been.
God has been very good to me.

Your posts at this point are annoying. We look on here to see news about the rv. All you're doing is putting in "fillers" info. Again, we we don't look here for this kind of crap!

Wow Joan - Are you having a bad day? Who are the "we" that you are referring to? It seems that others have already shown their approval of this post by their contributing comments - all of which are positive and very uplifting -

Why are people always complaining about such trivial matters?

Joan no one is charging you for the information nor forcing you to read it -- Please lighten up - read and take what is of value to you and pass on the rest -

Much of the information pertaining to the Dinar and its revaluation is someones opinion and cannot be proven as fact - Much of the intel / rumtel is speculation and has not been proven correct - in fact quite the contrary -- and you want to call this post about peoples lives - their goals and accomplishments - their battles and their struggles "crap" ??

Joan - please - I think you have made a gross misinterpretation and assumption - I think you owe Recaps and the readers an apology -

I hope your day gets better -- mine did just reading the stories here - maybe that is why I am "WISERNOW"

MARY ANN - What a story!! Thank you for sharing -- Most of us if not all do encounter struggles and suffering in this human experience and for each is hard to bear - I have had my share - and probably the worst was losing my 17 yr old son in an auto accidient - just about everything else pales in comparison to that

Your story shows you have amazing qualities in coping - strength - faith - hope - love - courage and perserverance - to name just a few --You never allowed the first devasting blow to keep you from risking loving again - or the second !! You are an amazing Lady and again thank you for sharing your story - I wish you the very best in life and pray that the RV is very soon for you to be able to do the things you have set out to do - Blessings !!
