Monday News Summaries and Commentaries
Well it is another Monday, what is so special about this week.....PM Abadi is in Davos, Switzerland for economic meetings, Kurd President Barzani decided to stay away from these meetings, saying that things are too pressing at home, the Integrity Committee continues to work their magic against corruption, and the budget of course remains in the headlines as it may be presented for a vote in Parliament this week, maybe on Wednesday....we shall see....meanwhile the world continues to turn.
Parliamentary Integrity: 16 regional banks provided false invoices central bank to buy dollars
Looks like the heads of 16 Iraqi banks may be looking for trouble with the Integrity Committee for falsely providing invoices to the CBI to buy the USD....this involves counterfeited bills it seems....this in part has to do with original charges that were filed against Dr. S but as things are coming out it is the banks who dealt with Dr. S and the CBI who are now being found at fault...the case remains under investigation but expect to see charges shortly.
Deputy Government Abadi calls for the preparation of a draft law of oil and gas
A Parliament member representing the PUK from Kurdistan is calling upon PM Abadi to send a copy of an oil and gas law to Parliament to be addressed....it is felt that Abadi has had enough time to get this drafted and put in motion to run through Parliament.....and we've seen that Abadi does have this effort on his radar screen....don't get overly anxious for the action, after all the Kurds have an agreement with Baghdad that beefs up their cause at the moment.
Barzani apologize for participating Davos
Kurd President Barzani has declined an invitation to attend the economic summit meeting in Davos, Switzerland this year, stating that he feels he is needed at home to handle homefront issues such as DAASH and other "exceptional" situations....an odd way to put things for him I think.
Abadi Office : Iraq will take part in the Davos Economic Forum in Switzerland
We know that PM Abadi made a stop in London for perhaps tea and terrorism efforts, then on to Davos, Switzerland to participate and represent Iraq during this annual economic summit of leaders....seeking support and understanding for Iraq on economic fronts at this point in time....
He points to Iraq's role in fighting a war on behalf of the world at the moment while at the same time seeking stability that will prove worthy for the Iraqis as well as the rest of the world.....he is looking for this summit to provide necessary support for Iraq at this crucial juncture of their fight against terrorism and a balancing of their economic structure as well.
Sabri's / Iraq Press /: Iraq will resort to carry instead of borrowing for the transit crisis
The government of Iraq remains cautious at this stage in borrowing from other countries to try and cover their budget deficit....they do not like the indebtedness that is created by such activities....the government believes that oil prices will rebound and that recovery can be made in the non oil sectors of the Iraqi economy, especially in areas such as taxation....according to the source here, Iraq has withdrawn $9 billion dollars from its banks Rasheed and Rafadain and has taken a withdrawal of treasury bonds of $3 billion dollars....but will this be enough.
A member of the parliamentary finance: acquittal Shabibi largest corruption case in Iraq
With the evidence against Dr. S reviewed and determined to not be as substantial as it was originally believed by Maliki's kangaroo court and Dr. S being acquitted of any wrong doing....where does that leave the other members of the CBI that were found guilty.....are they left hanging in the wind or have they too been freed of these charges, some of these folks were less fortunate than Dr. S and had served time in jail....
in my opinion....each individual must be assessed for their actions and activities and a determination made on the merits of their cases....obviously there has been wrong-doing proven by the Integrity Committee but mostly from outside the CBI
It sounds like at this point in time....the individual who is being interviewed in this article does not sound all that sympathetic towards Dr. S....so that makes me think we have yet another Maliki sympathizer here that does not wish to see egg put on the face of the former leader.
Haitham al-Jubouri: 36 employees in the central bank wasted public money under the guidance of Shabibi
Thank you WS for this second source that does reveal what I suspected....a member of the State of Law Coalition....likely a Maliki sympathizer is who is behind this article about CBI employees under the guidance of Dr. S in foundering away public money in the past...there is no love lost between this individual and Dr. S or the Integrity Committee or Judicial officials for clearing his name.....consider the source here.
Chalabi: You can not give a bailer $ 27 and give half the budget of the Army
It would seem that the head of the Finance Committee struggles with some very serious priority issues at the moment that may have some serious ramifications on the budget....he is of the belief that monies need to be cut to the military in order to feed and clothe the 2 million or so displaced Iraqi citizens who have had their lives disrupted by the terrorists who are calling Iraq home at this point in time..
The very terrorists who remain entrenched and prevent these same citizens from returning home....how does he propose to get these people home if military cuts are made....he appears to have a blind eye to the positive impact that recent efforts within the military have had and successes that have been witnessed in pushing back the terrorist threat in some areas.....
Politics is a balancing act between differing factions....neither of which can ever stand being in power for too long a stretch of time for fear of totally overbalancing the apple cart....there must be a balanced give and take of things.....but in the end if the power that generates the funds is severely hampered....in this case oil....the end result will not be pretty.....
Chalabi needs to understand the priorities of his country and be cautious of which horse he chooses to saddle...IMO....he raises valid points....but he needs to learn to balance things out.
Raise the Iraqi flag in Fallujah
A show of Iraqi force within Fallujah is slowly appearing and the Iraqi flag presence is once again being felt....led by those who are not sympathetic to the terrorist DAASH efforts.
Tamimi: 75 000 space in defense and plagued by corruption and internal electricity and banks
A member of the Finance Committee continues to point to more ghost bodies filling the Department of Defense in the past, now upwards of 75,000, at some point this mess will be cleaned up and those responsible held accountable for their actions or lack of actions at the time of the wrong-doing.
Parliamentary Finance: borrow money from the bank and the International Monetary bridge the budget deficit
I've noticed that when PM Abadi is the least bit out of place....meaning outside of Iraq....the opinions of others seem to come out of the woodwork.....more opinions surface today from within the Finance Committee along the lines of seeking loans from the IMF, World Bank, or other external entities.....all are plausible options I am sure.....but which will actually do the Iraqis the most good in their particular economic predicament....and which is most likely to be the closest to reality for them.....at this point I don't see the IMF as a strong option....but other banks...a distinct possibility....however n light of world currency issues from all directions....what real options do the Iraqis have.
Former deputy: some parliamentary parties want to block the adoption of the budget in 2015
Once again more opinionated stances that do not appear to surface when PM Abadi is near.....is this a serious threat to the budget.....I do not believe so at this stage of the situation....time will certainly be telling come Wednesday to see if there is a vote and which way that vote is allowed to go for the 2015 budget.
Tamimi: Region does not comply with the export of oil at rates
As is so often typical of political opinions being stated as what some see as pure fact.....only half the story is told here IMO.....why are Kurd exports down the first two weeks of January....the simple answer could be an issue of storage on the other end....at Ceyhan, Turkey, there are limited storage capabilities and as those fill up, the export flow rate must slow down....one can only pump so much of a liquid inside a finite storage container.....the storage at the Ceyhan end of things must have a market in which to sell the oil and if it does not then the oil sits idle.....I am suggesting that merely pointing fingers at the Kurds is not the most professional but perhaps political expediency of things to be doing.....stop rocking this boat and work together.
Iraq is moving to reduce the 2015 budget by $ 4.3 billion
Iraq has managed in the past three weeks to find ways of reducing operating expenses some 5 trillion dinars worth....that is a nice reduction in terms of a budget that has been struggling....something proactive and positive for Iraqis....instead of the doom and gloom that a few want to project and make you believe that Iraq is in near danger of tumbling and falling....and work continues to fashion a rescue of the budget deficit so as to not have such a detrimental impact upon Iraq.
Mr. Abadi .. people will cheer you up-Maliki trial
Once Iraq stood for corruption and lack of accountability at all levels of the government....now today thanks to efforts promoted and pushed by PM Abadi those days are quickly falling behind Iraq.....corruption is not acceptable....lack of accountability is no longer an option.....people are being held accountable for their actions...and hands caught in the till are being severely penalized....those from the past who did this are also being prosecuted to the fullest extent of their law...and PM Abadi has made it known that this is to include former PM Maliki, his family and any henchmen who can be found guilty of the process as well.....it reminds me of the "Untouchables"....tho I am not that old....LOL.
View the document .. first shipment of oil through the Kurdish government in Baghdad
Trust me, oil is most difficult to pump through a pipeline that is not there or is not fully completed.....if there are issues that remain in some areas that involve connectivity....let the Kurds have the lead by all means....they know full well how to get production online and how to keep it online.....just look at their track record since last May when they started to pump to Ceyhan, they have managed to keep the oil flowing while the North Oil Company of Iraq has had their pipeline down for much of that same time frame....go figure....one knows well what to do...the other just tries....come to grips with where the real experts are working on oil production in Iraq and being successful.
Oil Minister confirms the absence of a "secret deal" agreement with Baghdad oil Erbil
Oil Minister Mahdi claims no special secret deals were made between Baghdad and Erbil...the deal was fully transparent....what you see is what you get.
Plenty to consider for this Monday.....an interesting week we have ahead of us no doubt.....global meetings....budget meetings.....stress at all time highs for many....just remember to take the time to smell a few roses along the way.
