Saturday News Summaries and Commentaries
Good Morning Family, kind of a crazy weekend of news seems to be shaping up, some new stuff, but much old and rehashed stuff as well.
Integrity Rafidain Bank manager arrested after a robbery billions
I'm sure this man is not a personal friend of PM Abadi.....maybe a distant cousin of Maliki more likely....sounds like he might have been the kingpin to an operation meant to defraud the bank out of billions of dinar.....his running certainly does not look good for his future with the bank.....PM Abadi's Integrity Commission continues its search and investigation into these incidents and appears to be gaining a good track record in cracking many of these cases.
Weightings to impose taxes on public services such as electricity, water and fuel to meet the budget deficit
Taxation, and age old solution of government when there is a significant deficit......instead of spending less and tightening the belt, let's instead pick and choose ways we can tax the people to pay for our shortfall.....also looking at taxation of certain imported items, most notably electronic items.
Khalilzad: Baghdad may ask the Kurds to accept a confederation after the payment of oil bills
Sitting in a cash-strapped state currently, Baghdad may be looking at alternatives to pay oil bills.....could the solution be something that the Kurds would actually welcome? A confederation type of government might allow the Kurds more say in the sales of their own oil.....but it would also mean that Baghdad would not have to make payments to the Kurds.....could this be yet another win-win scenario in the making for both entities.....at this point it is difficult to tell.....and what happens to the premise that Iraqi oil is the owned by all Iraqis....many details yet to be worked out for this to happen I believe.
Cabinet discusses the 2015 budget on Sunday
Old news, we've seen for a day or so....but the interesting side of this is that Sunday is not a normal meeting day for the COM....Tuesday is normally their day to meet.....sounds like this is specific to oil issues surrounding the budget, mainly pricing.
Washington plans to send 250 armored vehicle anti-packs to support the Iraqi forces
So we leave them hundreds maybe thousands of vehicles in 2011....those end up in many cases in the hands of terrorists.....so now we send them 250 more....let's hope the same result does not happen again....at the very least this is 250 vehicles that O will not have given to our own local police forces....as though they have a need for such monsters.
Iraq spent four trillion dinars annually on loss-making companies
This could be described in so many ways.....throwing good money after bad seems to suffice for now.....at least they are recognizing the issue and attempting to do something about it......a part of the whole picture of cutting or curbing government activities where expenditures are not warranted and money is going out the door needlessly.....I also see a hint from PM Abadi here....something he mentioned more than once while working to form his new COM....a reduction in ministry positions....if it is just "fluff" why is it necessary.....cut the fat.
Zebari: large numbers of the popular crowd have not been paid
I've got to give this government credit they do not hide behind curtains and cloaks of darkness saying they are doing something and then it never materializes.....they have made "some" payments to fighters working with the government against the terrorists....but they realize they haven't all been paid.....so they look for ways to make those payments happen.
Abadi visit the Emirates tomorrow and Kuwait next week to discuss security cooperation
PM Abadi appears poised for a full court press on terrorism and heightened security and is taking his game plan to the UAE as well as Kuwait this coming week......I believe these neighboring countries are beginning to recognize a new Iraq that is standing up with a much stronger backbone and they are showing a willingness to cooperate in efforts surrounding security and the fight on terrorism....plus they have to still view Iraq as that cash cow with so much oil revenue and I am sure they want a piece of the profits to be made from Iraq in time.
Conscious / Zebari: the budget deficit after the adjustment of $ 30 billion
This article basically summarizes a number of previous articles we have seen over the past couple of days....the Sunday COM meeting on the budget, the reported reduced budget deficit to $30 billion dollars....where will the budget price of oil land...the elusive question for sure....that final $4.6 billion to be paid to Kuwait for the damages done during the 1990 invasion.....and their cash liquidity issues.
The Early Edition of things....more later if it develops. Enjoy your weekend.
