Sunday News Summaries and Commentaries
Well sorry this is a bit late getting out today.....but it is Sunday and the Lords comes first. Enjoy what is here, some interesting tidbits to say the least....should be the beginning of an interesting week I hope.
Parliament to end the first three laws of reading
More reading on laws by Parliament yesterday....meanwhile they did nothing on the budget.....they do recognize the need to get the budget vote sped up which is a good thing....I'm still looking for completion by the end of January....depends on who you talk with in the Finance Committee as to whether you believe they are actually done with the budget and ready for a vote....look for more by Wednesday
Hakim and Miladinov discuss ways the success of harmony and reconciliation conference
It looks like the UN will be helping Iraq put together a reconciliation meeting sometime in February....meanwhile the UN is also setting up a special fund that is designed to help with reconstruction efforts in Iraq where damages were wrought by DAASH activities.
Jubouri: Iraq is keen to strengthen its relations with Saudi Arabia
Speaker of Parliament Jubouri is looking forward to Iraq strengthening relations with Saudi Arabia and spoke on this while expressing condolences for the loss of their king....I am encouraged by these meetings with region countries, it is showing me that Iraq's new government is very sincere in repairing damage that has occurred over the past 20+ years and they want to create a bond that has long been broken between themselves and these countries.
Abadi: Moving to restructure the country's economy
More from Davos of Abadi speaking with the leader of the World Bank talking about the restructuring of the Iraqi economy....I'm of the opinion this man has some good ideas and plans for Iraq and just needs time to see them developed and implemented.
Decision: Parliament will not shut down this week, but after the adoption of the budget
I knew I had browsed over this article earlier this morning....encouraging news it is....they will not take weekend breaks until the budget has been voted on.....well get 'er done then.....maybe Wednesday or sooner....who knows.
Abadi: We did not go to Davos to beg and received bids from investors
PM Abadi spoke out on his return to Baghdad Saturday night...that Iraq did not go to Davos to beg for money...but did in fact find those willing to invest in Iraq at this time of need for them when cash flow is so very low....no doubt the war against DAASH is draining their funds even with coalition help.....they do need other support and it sounds like it may be forthcoming for them....
I knew this trip was more than just about terrorism and economics.....Abadi is one sharp cookie....NO Frank...no cookies here....
Abadi is skillful I believe in statesmanship and can hold his own in many financial and worldly circles....a man and leader to be reckoned with in times ahead.
COI thwart an attempt to smuggle 580 million dinars through Trebil
I'm sensing a new cop drama show for ION tv coming.....COI - Iraq......featuring members of the Integrity Committee bringing to justice those caught redhanded with Iraqi funds attempting to smuggle them from the country or hide them in foreign banks outside the country......just now they shut down an attempt to move 580 million IQD across the border....these guys are sharpening their "A" game and being ever so watchful.
Hisham al-Hashemi: Peshmerga closer to the zero hour set by the international coalition to liberate Mosul
Kurd Peshmerga is being successful it sounds like in wrecking havoc among some members of DAASH holding out in and around Mosul....they stand poised to strike when the green light shines from the International Coalition forces.....also included are some other Arab tribes as well who want to see DAASH pushed out of the area completely.
The new king of Saudi Arabia: We are working to strengthen our relations with Iraq
During ceremonies at the funeral of the Saudi king, the newly crowned King spoke about strengthening relationships between Saudi and Iraq when he met with President Masum, Speaker of Parliament and others from Iraq.....it should prove to be interesting to see where this takes Iraq in the near future.
Citizen: the blocks is not satisfied with the survival (Medhat al-Mahmoud)
A member of the Citizen Bloc is not happy with the current inter-relation between the Federal Court and the Iraqi Judiciary....saying there should be further separation between the two....this has been an issue in the past government and even believes that some integrity in the past was compromised....now is the time to amend the law while it is held in Parliament....and I agree rightfully so....speak now if you want changes to be made.....don't cry over spilled milk later that should have been cleaned up.
Source: Maliki tossing millions in exchange for not accountable for the fall of Mosul!
Run rat Run.....Maliki is going to get caught at his own game of bribery and corruption....what a way for a rat to go.....paying off military leadership to not ferret out his orders and actions that led to the fall of Mosul....the handwriting is on the wall...and the rope hangs poised and ready....just step up and try and it on for size.
Parliamentary Energy: Baghdad and Erbil oil agreement would give the provinces and 83% of the region's oil revenues
The recently signed deal between Baghdad and Erbil on Kurd oil will give 83% of the Kurd oil revenues to other Iraqi provinces....a profit sharing of sorts that will help bridge the deficit in the budget they are saying.....what an incredible amount of trust and cooperation between the two to have this happen.
Governor of the Central Bank receives 165 million dinars as the end of his service
Nice little golden parachute for just a couple of years worth of work for Turki.....meanwhile some still point out that his appointment as governor of the CBI was illegal....so does this still make Dr. S the governor....or is the new guy official....I'm betting the new governor is the real deal this time....but what is to happen with Dr. S....would he come back if asked by the right person at the right time....look at the back pocket of his pants....there is a circular bulge there and I'm betting it isn't a Skoal can....but instead an "easy" button....LOL.
Parliamentary Finance expects the budget presentation to a vote next Wednesday
So the Finance Committee continues to put the final touches on the budget....as they say maybe by Wednesday we will see some movement towards a vote within Parliament on the latest version of things.
Deputy Kurdish acts of Parliament criticized the absence of "important laws" table
Some Kurdish MP's are showing disappointment concerning the lack of laws surfacing to the table in Parliament.....the type of laws that would provide importance to the the Iraqi people...they point to the budget and security as issues that are of real concern to Iraqis.....let's get the real show on the table and see some movement that will be in favor of the Iraq people.
Specialists and parliamentarians: they claim to find modern innovations to lift the economy and not rely only on oil
The Iraqi economy is seen as moving towards a market economy rather than a planned economy.....refocusing efforts away from oil and gas into other industrial and agricultural sectors is going to help in a big way over time....I would suggest that over time Iraqis at all levels have gotten used to the reliance on oil revenues to pave the way for them....now that oil is suffering they are finally waking up to the fact that they as citizens must do more to help overcome the economic issues they face....no doubt oil is still king....but does not wield the might sword it once did for them.
The formation of a parliamentary committee to implement the political agreement and the paper, which was formed on the track government Abadi
A special committee to be formed to keep close tabs on the efforts of the government on Abadi's government....are they doing what they committed to doing back in September of last year.....not a bad idea....an accountability of sorts....something I am sure that Abadi is well aware of on his own....but this can lend more transparency to his overall efforts with the government and his actions with Parliament....seen as a good thing for him and for Iraq.
Parliamentary Legal address of the Federal Court to resolve the controversy determine the prime minister two terms
Well it would be good to put this issue to bed once and for all....two terms or more...what will be the final answer.
Central Bank decides to take the necessary measures to boost liquidity in the banking system and simplify the selling currency measures
The CBI is talking again it seems.....stating they are ready to take the measures necessary to boost liquidity within the banking system while simplifying the sale of foreign currency procedures that would lead to a stabilization of the market and exchange rate....
They also spoke in terms of acquiring government debt that would promote sustainability as well as create jobs and prosperity.....a plan for dealing with the budget deficit in the works possibly....this could be big news. Meanwhile they reiterate a point made earlier in the month about the global strength of their reserves, covering their currency 1.5 times....in all the crisis that faces Iraq....the CBI has not reacted in a way to show panic.....they do well playing cards with Kenny Rogers I think....straight poker face they are.
Abadi Office: Iraq agrees with Egypt to compensate financial dues by oil
I know what the headline says....but has Iraq really agreed to make this swap with Egypt or is this more smoke.....it seems to make sense for them to do this....getting rid of debt in return for oil to the Egyptians...my musing on this is around the CBI refusing to pay the $1.7 billion dollars to Egypt...did this happen before or after PM Abadi's visit with Egypt officials on the 11th of January....is there merely a lack of communication on the issue or is this a done deal...if so let's just move ahead.
Caught up at last...thanks for the articles guys good finds all the way.
