Thursday News Summaries and Commentaries
Abadi provides a summary of Iraq's post "Daash" national reconciliation in Washington
PM Abadi has opened his heart before many in the US this week, concerning the battle against DAASH, Iraqi politics, their economic strife of today, opening new roles for women, decentralization, and reconciliation...many topics before a number of audiences....
The most critical message he has conveyed though concerns their fight against terrorism and the need for more weapons, ammo, and other military equipment....surely the US can recognize the real need in this visit as opposed to visits by Maliki in the past....
They need to overcome the reluctance to offer this help and assistance....if it does not come from Western allies....where will Iraq look next.....who will become their new allies and what fate will fall upon the US and others if this is allowed to happen.
Department of Immigration announced the issuance of (64.650), a smart card for the displaced
The Minister of Immigration and Displaced People says the smart cards are moving forward for displaced families.....as of 4/15/2015 over 64,000 have been issued....but many more are needed to fully cover those who have left their homes and businesses because of threats from DAASH over the past year.....let logistics be cleared up to pave the way for these cards to get into the right hands at the soonest possible time.
Planning declare lower inflation index for the month of March by 0.2% and rising annually
Even though the Ministry of Planning is commenting on inflation within Iraq it is to me questionable at best since not all provinces are included in the calculations...those who have been largely overrun by terrorists have not been included in the picture....but at the same time what can be identified with inflation at this time is that it remains low....for the month of March falling an average of .2%....while the annualized number appears to have grown by the same amount.
Sadr rejects new rates for electricity and calls for non-payment of wages, except with the consent of reference
The cleric Sadr spoke and was against electricity rates in Iraq....calling for improved services that would see citizens provided with 24 hour service in return for eventual payment of wages....he is against any payment until there is some identified progress in improving power resources for Iraq....this voicing comes after the Ministry of Electricity announced rate levels last week....he is seeking improvements before payments are to be made....his voice is strong in Iraq...but how strong.
Back News News Economic News Russia's Lukoil has received a request to cut production in Iraq
Russia's Lukoil has received requests to curtail production in Iraq largely due to weather issues....these weather problems occur along the coast and shutdown exports when the weather is enough of an issue they cannot load tankers at their sea terminals...this is an issue that Iraq needs to look into addressing because it is a frequent issue for them in how they service these tankers now.....if they could be moored or docked at shore based facilities the weather would not be an issue for them.
Parliamentary security calls Abadi and Fayad al-Obeidi and cut short their visit and return to Iraq
Can you say "temper-tantrum"....that is what this amounts to.....this committee head believes that Iraq is not getting its way with the US so they should pick up their luggage and book a flight back home on the next available flight.....is PM Abadi listening....it does not seem so....just a knee-jerk reaction.
Parliamentary economy end the preparation of texts Investment Law
It would appear the Investment Law that has been through one reading with Parliament may be headed back onto the agenda soon for its second reading.....changes and adjustments have been made after listening to those who have some skin in the investment game with Iraq....and hopefully they have continued down the road of streamlining the process and elimination of much of the red tape along with the corruption that has been associated with investments in the past.....as they say....a turning point for the Iraqi economy.
Abadi looking with Lagarde Iraq's relations with the International Monetary Fund
PM Abadi, the Finance Minister and the CBI governor met with C. Lagarde from the IMF....and of particular note here....Lagarde came to Abadi....not the other way around as I would have expected.....how interesting this kind of posturing by the IMF before the Iraqi leadership.....of course they talked money....all of this in front of IMF annual meetings.
Abadi: my travel to Washington not beg and I will stand with the people of Anbar until achieving victory
PM Abadi wants to make it perfectly clear he is not in Washington to do any form of begging....he is there to make requests for equipment and for financial support in the war against DAASH and terrorism in general that has besieged Iraq in recent years.....
He claims, rightfully so, that the war they battle today will become the war of other nations if this serious threat called DAASH is not eliminated swiftly....for Iraq to do so they must have funding and equipment to make it happen....
He also made a great statement to the citizens of Anbar that he intends to stand with them until victory is achieved over the terrorists who currently occupy large portions of that province....help is coming...have faith.
An Oil Ministry official: the government has to pay I deal next June
It seems that part of PM Abadi's visit to the US is to coax US oil companies back into production within Iraq.....seems they have become dissatisfied with the former government and who could blame them....surely they can see a change today....but their real concern is the paycheck....the bottom line...where will the money come from with a country such as Iraq in such an economic bind that it cannot pay debts.....one solution might be to revalue their currency....but when....now is as good a time as any.....move this forward and bring those companies back to really pick up the production pace.
People crowd in a country receives his first salary
So the popular crowd fighters allegedly got paid today to the tune of 750,000 dinars....that could lead to a lot of "whoop it up time" for the fighters....wonder how the rest of the Iraqi Security Forces and Peshmerga feel about this effort....but this is the first payment they have received since being formed nearly a year ago.
Zbiyare: we asked for funding from the International Monetary Fund
According to the Finance Minister, Iraq is considering going to the IMF and asking for emergency funding....the ask has not yet been extended so he claims....but in a short bit I know we hear otherwise from other sources....still he claims the IMF would be comfortable in providing support as long as Iraq continues to look for way cut spending.
Zebari: Iraq decided to issue international bonds worth $ 5 billion
Yet another announcement from the Finance Minister....that Iraq has decided to issue the internationals bonds they have been talking about for weeks....$5 billion dollars in bonds to ease the pain of the budget deficit they face....this comes amid final meetings in Washington with Citibank and Deutsche Bank.
Hamoudi calls to find out of the economic crisis, real solutions
Hammond calls upon a number of Ministries and the CBI as well as the leadership of Parliament to find viable solutions to the current economic crisis that Iraq faces....he really isn't saying anything new that hasn't been said by others since the first of the year...since the budget was approved....he is just making noise that he and others grow impatient over the apparent lack of effort by those in positions to bring about change.....blowing off steam if you will.
The prime minister and General Electric are discussing development of the oil and energy sectors in Iraq
More talk regarding electrical energy issues within Iraq...where GE provides a great number of turbines to create electricity for many areas of Iraq.....this effort needs to continue to be fostered and grown between the two.
Iraq oil exports to rise April –oil minister
April oil exports for Iraq are expected to hit an all time high of 3.1 million barrels per day....but are still under the targeted 3.3 million per day of the 2015 budget....gotta stretch to make those goals guys.
Ebadi calls for the IMF to further cooperation and support for Iraq
Body language can often say so much....it would appear that PM Abadi definitely has Christine Lagarde's attention from the IMF....almost to the point that one could say she is on the edge of her seat.....the IMF stated that Iraq has their full support in various ways that can help Iraq rebuild their financial and economic situation.
Zebari confirms seeking to borrow five billion dollars from international banks and calls to address the "sag" government
Finance Minister Zebari sure wants to talk today....now he speaks about Iraq seeking $5 billion dollars from international banks and says they are likely to hit the IMF up for a loan of $700 million....while he calls for bureaucratic reform of the government....sounds like perhaps some headcount cuts in the government might be coming....the $5 billion in loans would be through Citibank and Deutsche Bank that has previously been discussed with regard to bonds.
