Thursday News Summaries and Commentaries
Side note: written after I had finished things below....do not be disappointed in what you see here...or what you see is missing....it is not a loss....for they continue to work in the right direction....I would never expect this budget without a fight by Maliki's side of things....he still has power...and maybe as its last gasp it tries to roar.....but in the end the good will win....the good will win....wait for it....for the best is yet to come.
Well the hiccups are on Iraq today it would seem....first the Parliament session was postponed from 11 am to 1 pm and now till 5 pm....for the vote on the budget....
Seems they don't have their act together as well as they may have thought...but remember what was said previous....we may not see this for 48 to 72 hours....wait for it...meanwhile....work continues on the national reconciliation meeting in the near future....we see a new oil company being formed in Iraq.
Presidency of the Parliament decided to postpone the meeting of the Council was held to five o'clock in the evening
Parliament session today has been postponed to 5:00 PM....due to lack of agreement on the budget bill.....seems the State of Law is making its presence known and throwing up issues at the last minute....so typically Maliki.
A second meeting of finance with the heads of parliamentary blocs, after failing to dissolve the differences budget
Now they are saying the heads of the political blocs within Parliament met with the Finance Committee and still are not in agreement to move forward with the vote on the budget.....there are differences between the State of Law and the Kurds.....old rivalries apparently die hard....someone needs to tell the State of Law to sit down and learn what reconciliation is all about...one has to wonder how much clout the State of Law bloc still carries....they are insisting that the Kurd oil all be sold through SOMO....something the agreement made in December did not include.
Jabouri: Work is continuing to prepare for a reconciliation conference in Baghdad will include wanted to eliminate
The Speaker for Parliament meanwhile says that work continues toward the national reconciliation conference to be held in Baghdad and partially sponsored by the UN.....the conference will be aimed at all religious sects and political entities within Iraq and will focus on "openness and disclosure".....no date has been set for this conference at this time.
Deputy Liberal: Abadi good steps and parties of the National Alliance seeks to disrupt the work of the government
A member of the Liberal bloc is stating there are members within the National Alliance....meaning the State of Law bunch that seek to disrupt the government's work...claiming their demands to not be realistic....praise continues to be heaped upon PM Abadi and his government in their initial efforts especially when considered over the lack of progress that had been made by the previous government....I believe that good will win in the end....we can only sit and watch at this point though.
Parliamentary Services demanding mobile phone companies to pay $ 500 million in budget support
The Parliament Services Committee is seeking to force mobile phone companies to pay a dues amounting to $500 million dollars that would be used towards the budget and reduction of the deficit.....this is seen as a "cost to do business" it would seem....much like the front money that oil companies had to put up back in 2009 in order to just bid on various fields where they wanted to work at the time....this time it is a way of thinking outside of the barrel trying to find ways to support the budget during the times of austerity.
Royal Jordanian will resume flights to Baghdad
Royal Jordan Airlines has announced the resumption of their flights into the Baghdad Airport...their flights had been suspended following the shooting directed at a UAE airliner on Monday....apparently they have been convinced that the airspace around the airport is once again considered safe.
Oil Minister announced the formation of Dhi Qar Oil Company
Oil Minister Mahdi announced the formation of the Dhi Qar Oil Company that would be used to develop and produce the Nasiriyah field and construct a Nasiriyah Refinery capable of 300 barrels of production a day.....good news for the folks in the province.
Parliamentary economy reveals new legislation for investment
Investment law changes are coming....so close there is to be an investment law conference to be held early in February to talk about how the changes that will be implemented will be to the benefit of investors seeking to enter into the Iraqi market...especially that of the private sector involving the industrial sector associated with building and construction around residential and commercial projects as well as tourism and other similar fields....what they are doing is attempting to streamline the permitting process and open things up for foreign investors to make their entry more palatable and scrape a large part of the red tape and associated corruption that had been established by the previous government.
Differences between the law and the Kurds and Sunnis may delay the adoption of the budget next week
It would appear that we may continue to wait on this budget....into next week.....differences between State of Law and Kurds over oil...and now differences raised by the Union of Iraqi Forces for inclusion of the National Guard financial requirements in the budget are being addressed and meeting a stalemate it would seem....Speaker Jubouri has said to have the support to pass the budget but these kinks have reared their heads at the last minute.
Deputy Kurdish: no final agreement until now between the political blocs to pass budget
Differences continue to flare between the Kurds and their old nemesis the State of Law bloc....with the State of Law wanting all Kurd oil to be pushed through the SOMO oil company.....so much for the agreement signed in December it would seem....unless cooler heads within Parliament can prevail on the issue.
Allawi's bloc linking the vote on the budget allocation "23 billion dinars," national reconciliation
National Coalition leader VP Allawi is demanding that 23 billion dinars be set aside for the national reconciliation meeting and says this must be done to get his bloc's vote on the budget.....I'm not seeing this as a major hurdle of things at this point in time....sort of a minor bump in the road.
Abdul-Mahdi: Iraq's economy will see a significant development on the ground away from the statements and empty promises
Now this smells of oil and gas.....oil and gas law that is....the HCL.....inclusion of the Iraqi people in the process going forward for what is rightfully theirs....Oil Minister Mahdi says no more empty promises....no more rhetoric without follow through....let's get the law created that should have already been in place and let it reap benefits for all Iraqis....well bring forth the law.
Parliamentary Finance reveal low central bank reserves and restricts sales in dollar auction
Smuggling of CBI reserves during 2014....to the tune of $10 billion dollars....if I were Maliki I would be looking for a bigger rock to hide under right now.....all eyes should be pointing in that direction in my opinion....this would have been his last hurrah in lining his pockets before being pushed from office....meanwhile the Finance Committee is attempting to restrict the dollar auction sales to $75 million dollars a day.....I'm not sure they have the ability to do such a thing.....will be watching for more on this.
Bureau: pass the budget today, but untrue to postpone the vote
So the budget is passed.....but the vote is postponed.....IMO....who cares...the leg work is done....the vote will follow when they are ready to tell us about it.....but when will we see the budget.....when they are ready to show it to us....when the CBI is ready to talk.
US Congressman: Excluding Kurds is Another Betrayal of America’s Friends
A member of Congress points fingers towards our current Administration in not following through to ensure the Kurds played a visible role in recent meetings in London where terrorism efforts were discussed.....pointing to o's administration as promoting "arrogant mistreatment" of the Kurds....now this congressman points to the current Iraqi government as the cause here, and I must totally disagree with him....Barzani was going to London and he himself backed away.....no not agreeing with his comments whatsoever.....I would believe this if it had been said 6 months ago for sure.
Vice President of European Parliament: Kurds Deserve Independence
I find it highly ironic the timing of some of these articles today talking about the Kurds as they are doing....especially in light of the wall the Kurds are facing against the State of Law on budget issues at the 11th hour.....now talk of independence....of course this has been discussed for years and has been of great interest in recent months.
Deputy: Hours are the ratification of the budget
So one member of Parliament...member of the Finance Committee believes the budget to be passed in the coming hours....keep watching for it.....when they are ready to let us know....they will.
Well the summaries rest for the time being.....do not be disappointed in what you read here....instead stay optimistic in what is to come....rest assured....the best is yet to come.
