UPDATE: Current updates for today…
So by all appearances Talibani is “slow walking” an official vote in the Parliament. This could be over a number of things. Primarily – he has had his heart set on a true National Meeting with everything being done once and for all. Personally – I think this is a “pipe dream”. Maliki has had every chance to make things right and chosen not to – over and over. A National Meeting with him at the helm holds very little promise – I’m afraid. Another issue Talibani might be struggling with is - there not being a clear cut replacement just yet – I’m sure he’s eyed the post-prospects and may not be on board yet. Whatever the issue – they seem to be intent on proceeding no matter what.
There are some other options for the opposition to proceed under – with or without Talibani. This prospect of a “questioning” of Maliki followed by a secret ballot in Parliament could be very problematic for Maliki. First – he has a tendency to get firey and Parliament will know it’s either him or them. Second, if the ballot is truly secret, I am fairly certain there will be far and away the numbers required to remove him from office. This may be another reason for the escalating rhetoric lately – the players all know the numbers are there. Especially if the MP’s have the protection of anonymity.

Whatever the underlying narrative – this coming week or two should be very exciting – to say the least.

Ahrar MP: Battle of the withdrawal of confidence has not actually started yet.
MP of Ahrar bloc Khaled Djiashi said that the battle of the withdrawal of confidence from Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has not actually started yet.
He said in a press release today: “The battle is not started by Maliki to end it by him, especially as it actually did not start yet, noting that the House of Representatives will be the Judge in this matter.”
On the formation of” loyalty to Iraq block” he said “The formation of this block is just like a puzzle, especially after the conflicting reports about the true number of its members, some say 37, others said Maliki met with twenty and we did not see at the conference held by its members ten only” .
It’s worth mentioning that the political scene is witnessing a conflict in the deputies’
statements , some say that the signatures to withdraw confidence from al-Maliki has been completed and the number is more than required, and others lie these statements, however, the statement of the Presidency yesterday confirmed a lack of quorum of signatures.
A statement from Talabani’s office on Saturday said that the Committee which is mandated by the President to check the signatures of MPs, received 160 signatures from Iraqiya, the Kurdish coalition and Ahrar block ( the Sadrists ) and some number of independents , then later added to them a list of number of members of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Later, 11 of the signatories informed the Office of the President to withdraw their signatures, while two other deputies called to suspend their signatures. “/ End
The most astute thought for some time – is the one above… “the House of Representatives will be the Judge in this matter.” Which is exactly why Dr Shabibi was insistent on waiting until the full measure of checks and balances were implemented – away from the hands of any one person. This is the very cornerstone of Democracy. Amen.
Mulla: Maliki begs lawmakers’ votes to keep his seat
Baghdad (NINA) – Spokesperson for Iraqiya slate, Hayder al-Mulla, said that Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is begging the votes of lawmakers to keep his seat.
In a statement to the press on Saturday, June 9, Mulla said that only seven lawmakers from Iraqiya slate visited Maliki on Thursday; only two of them have signed the petition demanding withdrawing confidence from the government, while the remaining five have not signed the demand.
He added that pathetic means such as depending on the Iranian factor and buying others’ conscience will not make us but more insistent on withdrawing confidence from Maliki’s government, who lost basic principles for building a state as well as vision of real national partnership.
Mulla went on saying that whoever wants to preserve his position, must obtain the peoples’ trust and large political blocs, otherwise no state official can preserve his post. / End.
Maliki has been in “full damage control” for sometime now…big-time bribery, intimidation, coercion and even probably “hit squads” for his opponents. These guys need to handle him while they can – if he wiggles free he will deal with them. This is a fact. It is thoroughly unfortunate our Administration appears to be playing silly games with this character.
Iraq: gathering the 160 is ready to provide dozens of other signatures within hours to move no-confidence
Considered the Iraqi List led by Iyad Allawi, Sunday, that the announcement made by President Jalal Talabani on a full-blown signatures indicates that Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Iran engaged in intimidation against the House of Representatives, saying that the gathering of the 160 who call for the withdrawal of confidence ready to offer dozens of signatures the other in less than 24 hours, as called for President of the Republic to “take responsibility and respond to the requests of the people.”
A spokesman for the Iraqi Haider Mulla said in an interview for “Alsumaria News”, the “Coalition of the 160 rejection of the dictatorship insists on termination of the confidence of the Maliki government,” noting that “the announcement made by President of the Republic that the quorum of signatures which the link is incomplete indicates that the Maliki and Iran may Marsa intimidation against the House of Representatives for not signing to withdraw confidence from the current government. ”
He was President Jalal Talabani said in a statement issued late at night yesterday, that his message on the withdrawal of confidence from Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki did not report to the Parliament for lack of a quorum after the withdrawal of 11 deputies, and in what was considered that the circulation of the names on the submission of candidates for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers violation of the constitution, called for proposals to study the past and need to hold a national meeting.
Basically, they are saying that even though Maliki has some of the Parliament “buffaloed” there are more than enough signatures to get a true “no confidence” vote accomplished. It appears there is some very serious (external) pressure on Talibani to not do this. I’m not sure it could be as simple as a “pre-ele
Urgent …Sources: U.S. ambassador to a meeting in Arbil, a Washington that “the withdrawal of confidence from the Maliki red line!”
BAGHDAD / Knights of hope Informed sources said that the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, James Jeffrey, will be present in Erbil before the meeting to be convened by the blocks claim of no confidence for Prime Minister Maliki tomorrow.
The sources added that “Jeffrey will be a message to the Washington meeting that the withdrawal of confidence is a red line, and he will present alternatives to satisfy the confidence of the opposition parties, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.”
She explained that “Jeffrey made contact with the leader of Iraq, Iyad Allawi and President of Kurdistan region Masoud Barzani and asked them to undo the confidence of Maliki, and he told them that put the issue in the House would put them to a sudden unexpected parties loyal to them and within their respective Groups that do not vote in favor of no-confidence exposing them to credibility embarrassed miss out on the streets of Iraq. ”
However that “Washington had conducted contacts with President Talabani, asking him not to pass the request to withdraw the confidence and sent to the House of Representatives, as you look at things from angles larger than seen in which claimants no-confidence, and it is the U.S. interest in the survival of Maliki at the top of the pyramid of power with a certain amendments to the concept of partnership to satisfy the other parties. ”
The best news about this piece is that it is not a particularly reliable outlet…on the other hand – if it is true, this Administration needs to quit fooling around with this guy or they will be known as the Presidency that supported and put in power – one of the worst dictators since Adolf Hitler. Strange – but it could easily play out that way.
We’re awaiting request to parliament to hold emergency no confidence meeting, says Ahrar bloc
BAGHDAD, June 9 (AKnews) – The Ahrar parliamentary bloc stated today that it is waiting to send a request to the Council of Representatives to convene an emergency session to withdraw confidence from the government, adding that some parties are having difficulties in collecting signatures for the no confidence vote request.
The efforts of Iraqiya, the Sadrists and the Kurdish Blocs Coalition (KBC) faced a setback after the success of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to attract more than 20 MPs from the Iraqiya List to his side.
All parties of the National Alliance (NA), except the Sadrists, reject withdrawing confidence from the government and support the option of dialogue at a national conference suggested by President Jalal Talabani.
Secretary general of Ahrar Dia al-Asadi said: “The Sadrist Movement collected 40 signatures and our said they can collect 170 signatures and this is what we are waiting.
“We are waiting for the request of President Talabani to convene an emergency meeting and submit a request to withdraw confidence according to the agreements, but it seems that other parties in Iraqiya List are facing difficulties, as well as some pressure.”
This faction is saying their only hold-up is Talibani – as soon as he calls for the meeting “IT’S ON”!! They don’t see any other hold-ups. I have been alluding to a couple of other solutions for a while – however, this appearance of lessening of pressure on Maliki doesn’t help anyone right now. If he gets it in his head he can win he won’t resign or capitulate…either one!!

The Damluji that “al-Maliki took over the army and the police become loyal to one person,” calling on President Jalal Talabani, to “stand with the decision to withdraw the confidence being the protector of the Constitution.”
For his part, spokesman for the list Haider Mulla during the conference that “Iraq does not have a personal dispute with al-Maliki, but disagreement about the approach used by the government in the management of the affairs of state”, pointing out that “Iraq agree to any person nominated by the National Alliance, rather than al-Maliki” .
Al-Iraqiya is looking for a peaceful solution – they haven’t been trying to stir up trouble… ;)
Here’s some headlines that are interesting…
Deputy for the rule of law: a conference Erbil and Najaf are not obliged to us because they were unconstitutional
So wait…let me get this straight – their angle now is, we can’t implement any of our previous agreements because they are “unconstitutional”?? Really?? Kinda’ crooked – don’t you think??
Iraqiya: We are moving ahead with the process of withdrawing confidence, we have other choices in the President does not determine his position
This is the next looming possibility – if Talibani can’t (or won’t) pull the trigger, there are several other opinions to get things rolling again. However, I suspect they need to get it going without completely alienating him – especially since he leads a very big part of the faction.
MP ,Hasnawi: Sadrists binding to withdrawal of confidence and 176 votes are ready to the operation.
Sounds like plenty of votes to me?!?
Will not permit sectarian regime and army politicization, Nujaifi
This is what I have been saying for some time – the Army won’t get involved – when it comes right down to it…
Nujaifi charges Maliki of attacking Parliament
Well – if he gets past this, they will be lucky if Parliament survives at all…they better start fighting as if their lives depend on it – because they do.
*** Rumor Comments *** – June 10th!!
Rumor - It has been estimated by reliable sources that at this point and time, every day that it does not happen, the ending rate will be increased by 85 cents.
That’s not what I would call an “estimation by a reliable source” – these guys should be Sci-Fi writers – they are truly talented!! Not a chance this is true.
