chattels: ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Iraqi central government owes $1.34 billion to the Kurdish Regional Government in medical supplies, a Kurdistan Parliament MP said Tuesday. Awaz Hamid, a Kurdistan region parliamentarian and a member of the Health and Environment Committee, told Rudaw that the Iraqi government provides 30-35 percent of medicine and medical supplies for the Kurdistan region.
“The amount of supplies is highly disproportionate with the population of the region,” she said. She added the amount of missing medical supplies has piled up since 2004 due to a freeze of medical supplies sent to Kurdistan. Hamid said the Iraqi government has not provided any extra medical supplies for more than 1.7 million refugees who have surged into Kurdistan because of war and insecurity in Iraq and Syria.
She also claimed that the Iraqi government still sends medical supplies to provinces under Islamic State control in Iraq, but it has blocked the KRG’s share of the same supplies.
