The Miracle of Courage
By Judi Lynch November 01, 2018
It takes great courage to face your fears head on and break through them.
Facing Fears: The Miracle of Courage
Throughout our lives, we face different kinds of fear. Our courage is tested in a myriad of situations and events in which we will have to make decisions. Choices which require bravery.
It takes a tremendous amount of strength to be able to recognize our challenges and resolve to change what no longer positively serves us.
For some, it’s easier to play it safe, knowing things can be better but choosing to coast with the well-known. We don’t have to languish; instead, we can reach out and ask for help.
The times we are living in right now take a whole lot of courage to stay positive and hopeful. So many are finally speaking out about situations that held them in fear of using their voices.
We have always had activists in the world who were passionate and brave beyond reason about injustices and inhumane treatment of others. Their selfless acts and refusal to be silenced gave hope to anyone who felt imprisoned or repressed because of their life circumstance.
It takes great courage for some to speak up in a room full of silence and indifference, and time for others to understand a just cause and join in for the common good. Collective courage can change the world. It can take just one person to change the negative energy in a room from fear to hope.
One word or action of a person who cares enough to make a difference will set off a chain of events creating change for the better. If it were not for these incredible souls, things would not be able to evolve.
If we think about ourselves as children and all of the things that frightened us, we remember the fears we overcame. When we thought there was a monster under our bed, did we look?
Did we hide under the covers? Did we call our parents for support? When someone dared us to ride the big rollercoaster, did we hop on or watch from a bench near the ride?
If a bully at school threatened someone in front of us, did we speak up? All of these events helped us to make choices and determine the difference between fear and courage.
“Go back?” he thought. “No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? The only thing to do! On we go!” So up he got and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.” ? The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien
We always have the choice to ask for help in understanding our anxieties about life. What causes some people to detach from caring too much because of the fear of loving another when others have no fear of falling in love many times during their lives?
The answer is their ability to move forward in spite of the fear. That’s the key. Concern can be a catalyst to action, or it can stagnate the mind into inaction. It is a choice.
When we find ourselves stuck and inactive about circumstances that need our attention we have to remember that we are in control. We have the power to change many things.
Through living, we can learn when to fight for what is right and when to remain silent to keep the peace. Sometimes courage means not saying anything and reflecting on what we are supposed to learn at that moment so that it may be later shared.
A person of strength knows that courage can be soft, or roar like a lion. It comes in many forms with twists and turns and various outcomes. It takes facing uncertainty and turning it into a miracle of spirit. It can happen in a split second or from years of adversity.
It lives in all of us in varying degrees but, if we keep our hope alive and our hearts open, courage will find us when we least expect it. We can change our lives with one step forward and someone else’s life when we face our fears.
